Caterpillar (CAT) generators have proved a reliable power generation choice across the world since the brand was founded in 1926. With such a prominent reputation across the heavy industries, you may wonder where Caterpillar generators are made?
Where are Caterpillar generators made?
While Caterpillar headquarters are in California and its original home of manufacturing is in Peoria, Illinois, the majority of its parts production is now contracted to third parties. In fact, CAT has an international footprint of manufacturing facilities with a total of 110 locations worldwide. In total, 51 plants are within the United States, with 59 overseas facilities scattered throughout Europe, South America, Canada and Asia.
CAT manufactures a huge range of more than 400 pieces of equipment including hydraulic backhoe loaders, excavators, dozers, motor-graders, off-highway trucks, wheel loaders, agricultural tractors, articulated trucks, skid steer loaders, natural gas engines, diesel-electric locomotives, industrial power generators and much more.
With manufacturing for CAT’S broad catalogue of products largely outsourced, a large proportion of Caterpillar’s industrial generators are made at its flagship manufacturing operation in China. Brazil and India have also hosted manufacturing centres for Caterpillar power generators across its 96-year tenure as the industry leaders supplying the construction, forestry, mining, energy and transportation industries.
Australia was home to a Caterpillar manufacturing plant in Melbourne up until 2015. Facilities which continue to operate across the globe can be found in Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Czech Republic, England, France, Germany, Hungary, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Northern Ireland, Poland, Russia, Singapore, South Africa and Sweden.

The United States continues to play a prominent role in CAT’s manufacturing, with four major plants operating out of Peoria including the Mapleton Foundry which is where large components are cast including diesel engine blocks, the East Peoria factory which has been home to tractor assembly for an impressive 70 years, the Mossville engine plant and the Morton parts factory.
